He missed a year to operations, physical therapy, and relearning to walk, but he walked away stronger in body, mind, and spirit. His injuries turned out to be mostly physical, despite the ominous warning from his neurological surgeon. He had been in a devastating car accident, a head-on collision that killed both driver and passenger of the car that hit him. However, before his number ever came up, he found himself in a hospital bed after a week of unconsciousness in the intensive care ward. Through the twists and turns of a young man becoming an adult, the author became subject to the draft lottery instituted to insure the country had an adequate supply of men to fight the North Vietnamese. ![]() And the dreams of the child never were completely snuffed out. Over two centuries ago the poet William Wordsworth (“My Heart Leaps Up”) wrote “the child is father of the man.” For the author of this memoir studying the poets of the Romantic era of English literature was the highlight of all his many years of schooling. They gave all three of their children the best education money could buy. Those dreams were deemed insufficiently ambitious to his parents who had experienced the Great Depression firsthand. Even as a little kid the author harbored visions of becoming a writer or perhaps a gym teacher. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() About Us About Us Payment Shipping Contact Us Returns About Us World of Rare Books specialises in rare, antiquarian and vintage books, including 1st editions of all genres. Hiro is determined and charming, and no matter what I do, I can’t stop letting him get involved. The words of the dead could lead us to the serial killer and even tell us who is next, but ghosts? There’s no such thing as ghosts. To add to my frustration, I keep running into Hiro at crime scenes only to hear him claim that he can talk to ghosts. When another man dies, I know we have a serial killer on our hands-the same murderer who has remained elusive for a year and a half. Still, the more I’m around Maddox, the more I realize that beneath that surly exterior is a kind and caring man who will do anything to help. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense. ![]() Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death… the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. ![]() ![]() Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. ![]() ![]() ![]() On her website Jan Brett describes her version: When I checked her blog post I read she liked the one illustrated by Yaroslava because: " the language is better here as it is detailed and descriptive and the story fun." I assumed this was the Jan Brett (1989) version but she said no so this made me curious to read this old tale and to seek out different copies. Recently my friend from Kinderbookswitheverything talked about The Mitten and the way she had several versions in her school library but there was one she especially liked. One review called this a "progression tale." In the version by Alvin Tresselt, pictured above, the mitten disintegrates after the arrival of the final creature whereas in Jan Brett's version the boy finds the mitten and we see his grandmother standing puzzled as she compares its size against the original. In the version by Alvin Tresselt the mitten is taken over by a tiny mouse, a green frog, an owl, a rabbit, a fox, a wolf, a wild boar, a bear and finally a tiny cricket. ![]() In the Jan Brett version the animals include a snowshoe rabbit, a mole, a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, a fox, a giant brown bear and a tiny meadow mouse. The mitten stretches and stretches to accommodate animals which are diverse in size and temperament. A series of animals discover the warm mitten and each one climbs inside. A young boy (or in some versions an old man) drops his mitten in the snow. ![]() ![]() ![]() Cut off from the world and left on their own, the teenagers soon form rival tribes who viciously compete for food, medicine, social dominance, and even human flesh. ![]() Park policy was that the mostly college-aged employees surrender their electronic devices to preserve the authenticity of the FantasticLand experience. Presented as a fact-finding investigation and a series of first-person interviews, FantasticLand pieces together the grisly series of events. How could a group of survivors, mostly teenagers, commit such terrible acts? Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where “Fun is Guaranteed!” But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. ![]() ![]() The way Scarlett is characterised is mostly fun to read, a powerful and passionate witch who cares about her sister above nearly everything else. One of the biggest points of frustration with me in this book was actually something that frustrated me in The Ravens too. With Kappa Rho Nu’s future on their shoulders and their pasts still haunting them, will Scarlett and Vivi be able to save their sisterhood once again? What did I think? Unbeknownst to the Ravens, new rivals and ancient evils lurk on Westerly’s campus. ![]() When Scarlett assigns Vivi the coveted role of social chair, Vivi is determined to live up to her Big’s expectations-even if that means dabbling in a new form of magic. For the first time ever, she’s got it all: her Kappa Rho Nu sisters and a sweet (and hot) boyfriend. Vivi Devereaux, a freshman, finally knows what it feels like to belong. But the powers of the presidency have their own pitfalls-and Scarlett has big shoes to fill. After the disaster that killed the sorority’s last president, Scarlett is determined that no sister will fall under the sway of wicked magic ever again. Scarlett Winter, a legacy Raven, has finally gotten what she’s always wanted: the Kappa Rho Nu presidency. After destroying an ancient talisman and barely saving their sorority in the process, they’ll go to any lengths to keep their secret as Westerly’s most powerful coven of witches. The sorority girls at Kappa Rho Nu-the Ravens-are determined to restore balance to the world. ![]() ![]() Nina Frost is an Assistant District Attorney who prosecutes child molesters. The actions of these perverts have almost always changed the paths of, and in many cases even ruined, the lives of the victims. The theme is made even more topical in these present times by scandals erupting almost daily about priests, both Roman Catholic and Protestant, who have taken advantage of their privileged position to gratify their own desires at the expense of a child's innocence. Perfect Match deals with a truly unpleasant subject: the sexual abuse of a child. She has a first hand experience of the unique, wrenching love of a mother for her child and so can incorporate that emotion into her books and, in turn, manipulate the emotions of those reading her work. She writes about family and relationships and it is the good fortune of her readers that she became a mother. This success generated her ambition to become a writer. ![]() ![]() A former teacher, Picoult was first published when she was in college. ![]() Certainly the legal and medical ferreting of facts she must have performed for this oeuvre is a credit to her.
